Why Did Sukuna Take Over Megumi

Sukuna and His Origin

Who is Sukuna how did he appear out of thin air and cause Havoc? Jujutsu Kaisen is one of those series that connects its past, present, and future, it narrates the plot meticulously and in an immersive manner. Believe it or not some mangakas are so talented that they somehow come up with the starting and ending of a series simultaneously.

Coming back to Sukuna, he is one of the antagonists of the series, but so far in the anime, he has done no critical life-threatening harm to the protagonist or his friends. Although exchanges of punches and kicks are merely jokes to him. But in the manga, he is the cause of the blood bath.

Sukuna is cold-hearted, selfish, and extremely sadistic, he enjoys watching his prey suffer, letting them die slowly and painfully. We see him frequently taunting and cursing Yuji. Sukuna’s personality is presented as a guy who doesn’t feel anything even after committing a massacre or slaughtering children.

A thousand years ago, the world was peaceful and sorcery was at its peak, the era was known as the “Golden Age of Jujustu.” This Era also gave birth to the undisputed King of Curses, the unholy Sukuna. Even among thousands of skillful sorcerers, he was noticeable because of his immaculate and immeasurable strength.

The other sorcerers of the Golden Age of Jujutsu era tried their utmost best to defeat him once and for all and somehow took him down after failing many times. After his death, Sukuna transformed himself into a curse and took the shape of 20 fingers and could only be reincarnated if a strong human swallowed it, and stood on their feet afterward. And that was no one other than Yuji, the protagonist.

Sukuna’s Motivations

Sukuna’s demeanor speaks about his desires, he doesn’t find anything interesting. However, based on his actions in the first season of the anime and early chapters of the manga, we assumed that he just wanted to have fun and find a bitter strong opponent to fight with. As of now, Sukuna’s goal is to find a strong vessel, that he could use more efficiently, and he did find one.

Yuji may be a kind and strong human, but it’s hard to imagine where his extreme stubbornness comes from, and as stated by Gojo, only Yuji can pull off such a thing as being Sukuna’s Vessel.

Why Did Sukuna Take Over Megumi Instead of Other Vessels?

Early in the anime, Sukuna shows signs of wanting Megumi’s Body in his possession. His interest in Megumi increased after he watched Megumi perform the ten shadows ability, which is extremely rare. Megumi inherits this ability from the Zenin Clan, and he can summon spirit animals and shikigami. The way it works is quite simple and easy to explain, Megumi could use his ability to summon multiple shikigami at a time, and if one shikigami blows up, the power transfers to another shikigami. In the end, he could use only one shikigami, who inherits the power of all. Overall, this technique proves Megumi as the most perfect host.

In the end, Sukuna achieves his goal of taking control of Megumi. It all starts in the Culling Game Arc, where Megumi loses control over his emotions after seeing Yorozu taking control of his sister. Sukuna in Yuji’s body finds this moment as a perfect opportunity to free himself from Yuji and take over Megumi. He injects all of his curse energy into Yuji’s finger and forces Megumi to eat it. This results in Megumi becoming the new host and Yuji being free of him once and for all.

This benefits Sukuna to have access to all of Megumi’s broken abilities, as well as everything Megumi will potentially do up until he becomes a real master sorcerer.

A widely believed theory elaborates about Sukuna’s plan of destroying all of Megumi’s shikigami leaving only one to fuse with, and then resurrect himself into a Shikigami. However, it’s only possible if Megumi learns and perfects the Ten Shadows Technique. This is the only ability we know so far that could beat any limitless six-eye user. And we saw it happening in the manga. Also, these were assumptions based on Sukuna’s actions.

Yuji was a cage for Sukuna

When the series introduced Yuji, everyone expected him to be another adaptive and quick-learning shounen protagonist, who was going to rise to the top and become the best Jujutsu sorcerer in a couple of months. He did land to people’s expectations but Gege Akutami, the manga’s writer, had different plans for Yuji. He didn’t follow the normal main character wins-it-all narrative style. Akutami instead nerfed the protagonist and made him suffer, as an antagonist does.

Yuji, after losing the cursed energy could still fight toe to toe against Sukuna, who is in Megumi’s body. But if Yuji is that strong, why was Sukuna looking for a new vessel? Yuji is depicted as an individual, who has immaculate raw strength. Technically speaking, Yuji was already stronger than Sukuna by a fair margin. Sukuna wasn’t able to showcase his true power when he was inside Yuji, as he does now in Megumi. Yuji was able to suppress Sukuna’s strength, and when Sukuna was about to go rogue, Yuji took control of his body with ease. In short, Yuji was a cage for Sukuna and less of a vessel. Which is why Sukuna had to find an escape plan. Because Megumi had everything Sukuna wanted he took over him at the best moment possible.

Megumi’s Role in Sukuna’s Plans.

Why Did Sukuna Take Over Megumi

Megumi is the main piece of Sukuna’s chessboard, he is like a queen, and Sukuna himself is the king. After having full control over Megumi’s body, there are two possible things Sukuna could do. First, he could make a new body out of shikigami for himself using Megumi’s Ten Shadows Technique and Broken Abilities.

The other thing Sukuna could do in the Jujutsu Kaisen series right away is seize full access to Megumi’s body and live for eternity. Although as we stated earlier his actions are fairly hard to predict and who knows what he could do. Overall, we know one thing for sure, Sukuna’s evil arc starts now and Megumi is his key to unlocking those dreams he aspires to achieve.

Conclusion

Why did Sukuna Take Over Megumi? Well, he did because he had to. Yuji wasn’t going to let him do what he wanted, and for that, he needed to find a new vessel. The day he took a glance at Megumi, Sukuna marked his words to achieve the absolute power that he sees in him. Which is why he chose Megumi over anyone else.
